HEE Population Health and Prevention Programme - Awarded Contracts enclosed

The HEE Population Health and Prevention Programme recently ran a competitive process to identify innovative work to upskill the maternity and primary care workforces in the area of public mental health.

We awarded two contracts to South London and Maudsley NHS FT and you can find the description of their projects below:

Mental Health Promotion Training in Primary Care and Community Pharmacy

This project seeks to develop a training programme of complementary resources for mental health promotion skills for primary care and community pharmacy workforces, and subsequently deliver the training resources to meet learners’ needs through simulation training, a face-to-face masterclass, and digital resources. Evaluations will support development of ‘proof of concept’ for this training programme and enable useful conclusions and learning to be drawn, while the digital resources and training programme outline will be disseminated widely. Stakeholder engagement, marketing and communications, and needs analysis activities will support the delivery of this project, which will directly deliver training resources to more than 50 primary care and pharmacy staff via a masterclass and simulation training course.

Mental Health Promotion Training in the Maternity Workforce

This project seeks to develop a practical competency framework for mental health promotion skills for maternity workforces, and subsequently design and pilot a stepped training programme to meet the needs of learners through simulation training, face to face masterclasses, and digital tools. Stakeholder engagement, marketing and communications, and needs analysis activities will support the delivery of this project, which will deliver a competency framework and digital resources that can be accessed by many professionals, as well as a masterclass and simulation training course to be accessed by approximately 60 maternity staff.

Groundbreaking new platform launched to support mental health - Every Mind Matters

PHE and the NHS launch Every Mind Matters to help people take simple steps to look after their mental health, improve their mental wellbeing and support others.

Every Mind Matters shows people the simple steps they can take to be better prepared for life’s ups and downs. The new platform, which has been endorsed by the Royal College of General Practitioners (RGCP), will enable people to create a personalised action plan recommending a set of self-care actions to deal with stress, boost mood, improve sleep and feel in control.

This new resource is available for the public and for GPs to advise their patients to use.  The NHS will also promote Every Mind Matters to its one-million plus workforce.”

Your Path in Research - NIHR campaign

Launch of the IAPT BAME Positive Practice Guide

BABCP are delighted to announce the launch of the long-awaited updated IAPT Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Service User Positive Practice Guide.

Thanks to the efforts of Andrew Beck, Saiqa Naz, Michelle Brooks and Maja Jankowska, this updated version of the guide has been compiled by both IAPT clinicians and service users.

Register your place for the 2019 North West PPN Annual Conference - A Digital Future for the Psychological Professions: Implementing the TOPOL Review

The North West Psychological Professions Network (PPN) are delighted to announce the 2019 PPN Annual Conference will focus on the implications and opportunities for the psychological professions working within the NHS as it sets out its vision to prepare the workforce to deliver the digital future.

The Topol Review (HEE, 2019) highlights that the NHS finds itself at a unique point in the history of healthcare, with the convergence of new technologies, advances in genomics, developments in biosensors, the electronic patient record and smartphone apps, enabled by artificial intelligence within a digital infrastructure, creates the capacity of healthcare on to deliver personalised care in a far more rational, efficient and tailored basis.

Building a Digital Ready Workforce (BDR) is a national programme being led by HEE that aims to build a workforce that has the understanding and skills to use data, information, knowledge and technology to transform the way they offer health and care services.

Spaces still available for the New Roles in Psychological Professions - Clinical Associates in Psychology (CAPs) Workshop

New Roles in Psychological Professions

There has been considerable interest in the potential of psychology graduates to be part of the health and care workforce.

The Clinical Associates in Psychology (CAPs) role is a role with potential to support workforce development in the Psychological Professions.

CAPs initially developed in Scotland where the role is specific either to adults with common mental health problems (similar to IAPT) or children and families.  More recently, Exeter University in partnership with Cornwall Partnerships FT, have trailblazed the CAP role along with the development of a bespoke training programme, to address workforce recruitment problems in the South west of England. 

CAPs train for one year at Masters Level and once qualified operate at a Band 6 level. The CAPs must be supervised by a clinical psychologist and are trained to deliver assessment, formulation and treatment for people with mental health problems.

The vision for the CAP role is to create a new workforce to bridge the gap between graduate psychologist and Clinical Psychologist, developing the career pathway for graduate psychologists whilst enabling services to innovatively meet patient needs. CAPs are a unique way to address the psychology and wider mental health recruitment challenges.

The Apprenticeship Standard for CAPs is in the process of being approved and from January 2020 the Master’s Level Training Fees will be available to organisations through the Apprenticeship Levy.

In the North West and across the North of England there is growing interest in the potential of these roles. 

The PPN has organised a workshop on Thursday 7th November 2019, 1pm – 5pm at the King’s House Conference Centre in Manchester. 

The  workshop will provide an opportunity for Psychological Professions’ Leads, Service Managers, Workforce Planners, Commissioners and Education Providers to come together to explore opportunities to develop this role in the North West.

Information will be available about the role and how the apprenticeship standard can provide an effective development route.
