Apprenticeships are an increasingly important part of the long term plan for improved workforce development and enhanced productivity in England. The government’s apprenticeship reform programme is aimed at ensuring apprenticeships in England become more rigorous and more responsive to the needs of employers.

The purpose of this document is to describe the significant changes to apprenticeships in England and how these changes relate to NHS Trusts as large public sector employers. It is aimed at NHS Trust managers and leads with responsibility for training, education, HR, organisational development, recruitment, workforce and related areas. However, the apprenticeship changes will have a much wider impact across all NHS Trusts who will pay the levy and on their outlook to training, recruitment, workforce and budgets.
